Protoblast: Notes Notes From The Artist...

Protoblast is the culmination of years of experimentation with different comic strip formats. I've developed a few different types of comic strips/panels in the past, but I have found that the single panel format best represents my sense of humor, and are the most fun to draw and write.

Sometimes people ask me how I get my ideas? Observing others around me (and of course looking at my own quirks and foibles) is my best source of material. I try to make mental (but often actual notes) and then look for ways to exaggerate those people and or situations. I think that that's really the genesis of all comedy; exaggeration and contrast. I tend to like cartoons that are funny in a "hitting too close to home" kind of way.

Ideally, we all should be able to handle (and hopefully laugh at) seeing ourselves in a satirical light.

Creative Influences: Some of my favorite cartoonists are, John McPherson (Close To Home), Gary Larson (The Far Side), Bill Watterson (Calvin And Hobbes), Berkley Breathed (Bloom County), and John Callahan. But without question, the artist whose work I admire the most is Wiley (Non Sequitur).

Wiley's sense of humor cuts to the chase. His work doesn't require a lot of lengthy dialog, and he never tries to over-explain what he's telling the reader. It's all that it needs to be and never more. Not to mention that the artwork is unmatched.

Finally, to the person whose idea it was to put my cartoons on the internet, I say thank you, Joshua D. Scott. Without your hard work and creative as well as technical expertise, this web site would not exist.

I hope you've enjoyed my work, and in the words of Gary Larson: "Those of you who hate my cartoons... Well, your mother's a cow." -- Todd H. Lane --
